Thankful for Friendships
I had mixed
emotions about calling my longtime friend. I wanted to find out how he was
doing, but I was scared. Joe (not his real name) was diagnosed with dementia recently.
This was my first attempt to contact him since I learned the shocking news.
One call resulted
in hearing his answering machine. So a couple weeks later, I mustered up the
courage to try the call again.
This time
when I connected I heard the sweet words, “Tall Paul,” Joe’s nickname for me.
We went on with an awesome conversation.
This man is
a man of God. He always quotes Bible verses and challenges me in my
relationship with God. Our phone call last week was no different.
I have learned so much from this man. He has
taught me passion about prayer and my relationship with God.
He wants to
beat dementia with the Lord’s help. He ask me to pray. That’s the least I can
do for a dear friend who has helped me and encouraged me so much
Because of
his condition, our relationship may be different. But we will always be
brothers.
Friendship is a special gift. In this season of Thanksgiving,
we can be thankful for dear friends and the
opportunities to touch their lives too.

Facing Fear in Sioux Falls, South Dakota
Recently, I
traveled to Sioux Falls for a speaking engagement. My plan was to talk to
junior high and high schools on my usual theme: ‘Keep Your Uniform On.’ Part of
the presentation was on how to overcome fear.
As I
traveled in my car on the South Dakota interstate and freeway, I thought how
ironic is it that I have a real life example on how to face fear because the
heavens were opening up with buckets of rain. I couldn’t see the road. So being a Christian, I prayed for help and
safety. It was still extremely difficult but I made to my hotel.
The next
day, unknown to my audience, I had practiced in a real way what I would say
about fear later.
Fear is a real emotion and a difficult one. Sometimes all we
can do is persevere. Are you facing your fears?

Be Available to Someone Today
I met Debbie (not her real name) after one of my speaking opportunities at a high
school. She wanted to talk and I wanted to listen. She figured I was safe.
She
told me her story. Her father moved to a new job and a new city. Debbie was
part of the move with a new school and new classmates. She didn’t fit in. She
thought about suicide but thankfully decided it wasn’t God’s way. But
getting up there to speak in my brokenness (cerebral palsy and stuttering) gave
this young woman hope.
We
all have life stories. We all have brokenness.
Be willing to share part of your story when it might help someone else
on their difficult journey.
